PSYCHODRAMAAbstract
Since Moreno first explored and defined role playing,' it has been refined and expanded through experience and application.2 Techniques have been born which facilitate role playing procedure in aiding the pursuit of the spontaneous moment. The barrier technique, recently developed by Weiner, et al,3 allows an individual to set up externally the restraints that he feels internally. A protagonist who feels trapped or blocked is encircled and/or walled off by auxiliaries in order to symbolize his psychological state. He is then directed to respond to the barrier. The ensuing action can provide diagnostic information, as well as result in catharsis.
