An important goal in psychotherapy is attainment of insight, which in tum has the tendency to initiate new patterns of thinking and behavior. One method a therapist can use to help the patient attain insight is confrontation: that is, the therapist shows the patient the underlying, real purpose of his behavior and his biased perceptions.
