Counseling has traditionally depended upon some kind of counselor-client relationship. This chapter cannot present a detailed analysis of the counseling relationships defined by each of the therapies which have been in use during the last quarter of a century, (psychoanalysis, directive and non-directive techniques, value analysis, semantic analysis, role therapy, direct needs therapy, situational therapy, medical therapy, and others) but a brief overview of significant trends may serve as a background for the discussion of action ( or psycho- dramatic) counseling which, then, will be more fully considered
