"Human language," Flaubert wrote, "is a cracked kettle on which we beat out tunes for bears to dance to . . . ." Steve Lankton, author of Practical Magic, would say that the effectiveness of this excerpt lies in its ability to evoke from the reader an array of visual, kinesthetic and auditory experiences.
