The development of a sense of dependency and helplessness which occurs in many psychiatric patients in response to the imposition of powerful institutional controls has been reported widely as one of the most adverse effects of institutionalization (Almond, 1974; Goffman, 1961; Jones, 1953; Stanton & Schwartz,
